Weighted GPA Calculation: Formula and Example

Formula

GPA = (Sum of (Grade Points × Credits)) ÷ (Total Credits)

Example (Weighted GPA Calculator)

Assume a 4.0 scale:

  • Course A: 3 credits, GPA points = 4.0 → quality points = 12.0
  • Course B: 4 credits, GPA points = 3.0 → quality points = 12.0
  • Total credits = 7, total quality points = 24.0

GPA = 24.0 ÷ 7 = 3.43

This is why it is called a weighted GPA calculator: higher-credit courses have a bigger effect on your final GPA.
