Weighted Final Grade Formula With Example

Most classes use weighted grading, where your final exam is just one piece of your overall grade. The basic formula used by this final grade calculator is:

Course Grade = Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight) + Final Exam Score × Final Weight

Where:

• Current Grade = your grade before the final
• Final Weight = the final’s percentage of the course (as a decimal)
• Final Exam Score = your score on the final exam

Example: “What Do I Need on My Final?”

Imagine:

• Your current grade is 85%
• Your final exam is worth 30% of the final grade
• You want a final course grade of 90%

Let x be the score you need on the final:

90 = 85 × (1 − 0.30) + x × 0.30

90 = 85 × 0.70 + 0.30x

90 = 59.5 + 0.30x

0.30x = 30.5 → x ≈ 101.67
