Summary And Notes
  • Generic linear methods treat GPA as a direct proportion of the maximum value (GPA ÷ scale × 100).
  • Many universities and scholarship providers use their own tables or banded systems (especially in the UK, India, and Europe).
  • Letter grades here are estimated from the percentage using your selected scheme and thresholds above.

GPA to Percentage Formula (With Examples)

A common method is a linear conversion: Percentage = (GPA ÷ GPA Scale) × 100. This is often called “GPA to percent” conversion.

Example 1: 3.5 GPA to Percentage (4.0 scale)

If your GPA is 3.5 on a 4.0 scale:
(3.5 ÷ 4.0) × 100 = 87.5%

Example 2: 8.0 CGPA to Percentage (10-point scale)

Many Indian university conversions use the approximation Percentage ≈ CGPA × 9.5.
8.0 × 9.5 = 76%

Important: Some institutions do not use linear conversion (especially band-based systems). That is why our tool also includes an “approximate UK honours band” style result.
