GPA to Percentage Calculator: Nine Conversion Standards, One Tool
If you have tried converting your GPA to a percentage online and gotten different answers from different sites, that is not an error; it is because there are genuinely different formulas depending on which country and institution you are dealing with.
This calculator shows all nine major conversion methods at once: the standard US proportional formula, India’s UGC ×9.5 method, the Australian 7-point scale, the Canadian 4.33 variant, the European 20-point, UK honours bands, and more.
Enter your GPA and its scale. Select which conversion method your institution or employer requires. See all results simultaneously and select the one that applies to your situation.
The Nine Conversion Methods: What Each One Means
The calculator runs nine standards in parallel. Here is what each one represents:
Generic linear (GPA ÷ scale × 100): Works for any scale. If your school uses a 4.0 scale, a 3.6 GPA = 90%. The same principle applies to any other maximum.
US / Canada 4.0 (GPA ÷ 4.0 × 100): The most widely used standard internationally. A 3.8 GPA = 95%.
US / Canada 4.33 (GPA ÷ 4.33 × 100): Used by schools that give A+ a value of 4.33. A 3.8 on this scale = 87.8%.
Canada 4.5 (GPA ÷ 4.5 × 100): Some Canadian institutions use a 4.5 maximum. A 3.8 = 84.4%.
India CGPA × 9.5: India’s UGC-recommended formula. An 8.0 CGPA = 76%. Completely different from proportional division.
India CBSE CGPA × 9.5: Same formula, used for CBSE board results.
Europe 20-point (GPA ÷ 20 × 100): For institutions using a 20-point grading scale.
Australia 7-point (GPA ÷ 7 × 100): For Australian universities using HD/D/CR/P grading.
UK Honours band: Not proportional. Maps to degree class: First (≥70%), 2:1 (60–69%), 2:2 (50–59%), Third (40–49%).
The Core Formula: GPA to Percentage on a 4.0 Scale
For the US and most international contexts, the baseline formula is straightforward:
Percentage = (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100
| GPA (4.0 scale) | Percentage | Letter Grade |
|---|---|---|
| 4.0 | 100% | A+ / A |
| 3.9 | 97.5% | A |
| 3.8 | 95% | A |
| 3.7 | 92.5% | A– |
| 3.5 | 87.5% | B+ |
| 3.3 | 82.5% | B |
| 3.0 | 75% | B |
| 2.7 | 67.5% | B– |
| 2.5 | 62.5% | C+ |
| 2.0 | 50% | C |
This is the formula most universities, scholarship programs, and international employers use to convert from a US-style GPA to a percentage.
India’s GPA to Percentage: The ×9.5 Formula Explained
India is the most common reason someone needs to convert GPA to percentage, and India uses a fundamentally different formula from the proportional method above.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) formula for CGPA to percentage is:
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
This applies to the 10-point CGPA scale used by most Indian universities and was originally the standard for CBSE Class X results.
| CGPA (10-point) | Percentage (UGC ×9.5) |
|---|---|
| 10.0 | 95% |
| 9.5 | 90.25% |
| 9.0 | 85.5% |
| 8.5 | 80.75% |
| 8.0 | 76% |
| 7.5 | 71.25% |
| 7.0 | 66.5% |
| 6.5 | 61.75% |
| 6.0 | 57% |
Note that a CGPA of 9.0 yields 85.5%, not 90% as a simple proportion calculation would suggest. That 4.5 percentage point gap is exactly why Indian students get different answers from different tools. Most tools use proportional division; the UGC formula is not proportional.
Why Different Calculators Give You Different Answers
Different countries and colleges use different grading systems. The percentage result you get depends entirely on which formula the tool uses, and most sites only use one without explaining which.
Here’s what produces different results for the same input GPA:
- A US student with a 3.6 GPA on a 4.0 scale gets 90% using proportional division.
- An Indian student with a 9.0 CGPA gets 85.5% using the UGC formula, not 90%.
- The same 9.0 CGPA calculated proportionally (9.0 ÷ 10 × 100) would give 90%, but that is not the UGC method.
- A UK student whose transcript shows a 2:1 degree is mapping to a band (60–69%) rather than a linear percentage.
These are not errors; they are different conventions for different systems. The calculator above shows all of them, so you can pick the one your institution or employer actually uses.
UK, Australia, and Europe: How Their Systems Differ
United Kingdom non-linear bands: UK degrees do not convert to percentages proportionally. A First-class degree is broadly equivalent to 70%+, a 2:1 to 60–69%, a 2:2 to 50–59%, and a Third to 40–49%. If your UK transcript shows a degree class, report the class, not a calculated percentage, for UK applications. For international applications, the calculator maps your approximate grade to the nearest band percentage.
Australia 7-point linear: Australian universities use HD (7), D (6), CR (5), P (4), F (0). The percentage conversion is proportional: (GPA ÷ 7) × 100. A GPA of 6.0 = 85.7%.
Europe 20-point: Some European institutions grade out of 20. The formula is (GPA ÷ 20) × 100. A 16/20 = 80%.
Which Formula to Use: A Practical Guide
Choosing the right formula depends on what the form asks for and where it is going.
Job applications in India: Use CGPA × 9.5 if you have a 10-point Indian CGPA. Use (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100 if you have a US-style GPA and the employer asks for an equivalent percentage.
Indian university admissions: Check the institution’s specific conversion policy. Many Indian universities specify the UGC × 9.5 formula on their admissions page.
US or UK graduate school applications: Report your GPA as-is on the scale it appears on your transcript. Most US and UK programmes prefer the raw GPA rather than a converted percentage. If they ask for a percentage, use (GPA ÷ scale) × 100.
Scholarships: Read the eligibility criteria. If they specify a minimum percentage (e.g., “65% aggregate”), convert using whichever formula matches your transcript’s grading system.
FAQ: GPA to Percentage Calculator
What is a 3.5 GPA in percentage?
On a 4.0 scale using the proportional formula: (3.5 ÷ 4.0) × 100 = 87.5%. On a 4.33 scale: (3.5 ÷ 4.33) × 100 = 80.8%. The result depends on which scale your institution uses.
What is a 3.8 GPA in percentage?
On a 4.0 scale: (3.8 ÷ 4.0) × 100 = 95%. This is a very strong result and exceeds most international scholarship minimum requirements.
What is a 3.7 GPA in percentage?
On a 4.0 scale: (3.7 ÷ 4.0) × 100 = 92.5%. On a 4.33 scale: 85.5%.
What is a 3.0 GPA in percentage?
On a 4.0 scale: (3.0 ÷ 4.0) × 100 = 75%. This is equivalent to a B average and meets minimum thresholds for many graduate programmes.
What is 8.5 CGPA in percentage using the Indian formula?
Using UGC’s CGPA × 9.5: 8.5 × 9.5 = 80.75%. This corresponds to a First Class result at most Indian universities.
What is 9.0 CGPA in percentage?
9.0 × 9.5 = 85.5% using the UGC formula. Note that using proportional division (9.0 ÷ 10 × 100) gives 90% — a different result. Most Indian institutions and employers expect the ×9.5 method.
What is 7.5 CGPA in percentage?
7.5 × 9.5 = 71.25% (UGC formula). Proportionally: 75%. For Indian applications, use the UGC formula unless the institution specifies otherwise.
Is this the same as a CGPA-to-percentage calculator?
For Indian 10-point CGPA inputs, yes, enter your CGPA as the GPA value and set the scale to 10.0. The India ×9.5 row in the results table will show your percentage using the UGC formula. If you need to calculate your overall CGPA from individual semester grades first, use the CGPA calculator.
