Class Average Formula With Examples
1) Equal-weight class average (mean)
If each student counts the same, the formula is:
Class Average (%) = (Sum of all student percentages) ÷ (Number of students)
Example: Scores: 70, 80, 90
Class Average = (70 + 80 + 90) ÷ 3 = 80%
2) Weighted class average
If different scores have different weights:
Weighted Average (%) = (Σ (score × weight)) ÷ (Σ weights)
Example: 85 (weight 40), 75 (weight 60)
Weighted Average = (85×40 + 75×60) ÷ (40+60) = (3400 + 4500) ÷ 100 = 79%
3) Points-based average (earned/possible)
If you enter points instead of percentages:
Class Average (%) = (Total Earned ÷ Total Possible) × 100
Example: Earned 450 points out of 600 possible
Class Average = (450 ÷ 600) × 100 = 75%
