Weighted High School GPA: Formula and Example

Unweighted GPA formula

Unweighted GPA = (Sum of (GPA points × course credits)) ÷ (Sum of course credits)

Weighted GPA formula

Weighted GPA uses the same structure, but adds an extra bump for advanced courses. A common weighting method is:

  • Honors: +0.5
  • AP/IB/Dual Enrollment: +1.0
  • Cap the result at your GPA scale (e.g., 4.0 or 5.0)

Example

Suppose you have two 1-credit courses:
English (A) = 4.0, Honors Algebra (B+) = 3.3

  • Unweighted: (4.0×1 + 3.3×1) ÷ 2 = 3.65
  • Weighted (Honors +0.5 on Algebra): (4.0×1 + 3.8×1) ÷ 2 = 3.90
