Below common entry thresholds – focus on improving subject grades and core components.
  • For a diploma award, CAS completion is required even though it does not add points.
  • An E in TOK or EE can be a failing condition for the IB Diploma regardless of subject points.
  • CAS completion and TOK/EE grades can affect diploma eligibility even if points are strong.
  • Predicted calculations still work, but formal diploma rules apply only to full IB candidates.

How IB GPA is Calculated (Simple Explanation)

This tool converts each IB grade (1–7) to a base GPA value, then averages them to produce: Unweighted GPA and (optionally) Weighted GPA for HL subjects.

Unweighted GPA

Each subject grade becomes a GPA number (mapped to a 4.0 base), then scaled to your chosen GPA scale. The final unweighted GPA is the average of all valid subjects you entered.

Weighted GPA (HL Bump)

If you enable HL weighting, the calculator adds a small HL bump on top of HL subjects (capped so results stay realistic). This is useful if your school uses a weighted grading scale for advanced courses.

TOK/EE Bonus (Diploma Points)

The tool also calculates your estimated IB points using your best 6 subjects plus the TOK/EE bonus matrix. This helps you see a “big picture” IB score, not just GPA.
